Club Walking Holiday November 2024

Evesham Rambling Club members escaped the dank weather of a British autumn and ventured to the Canaries for the first time as a club. One of our newer members reflects on the adventure.
A group of 18 spent 9 days near Costa Adeje on the West coast of Tenerife, staying at a comfortable, inexpensive hotel; some long standing club members but also more recent recruits, who were made to feel very welcome.
Ably guided by two members of the club, who have extensive experience of the area, we had a great time exploring the wild mountain trails and ravines and the foothills of Mount Teide – the highest mountain in Spain.
Generally staying away from more populous areas, other than for coffee breaks(!), we were quite disciplined in that we usually assembled at 9:15 each day to depart in hire cars to the remoter areas.
The main party walked between 5 and 8 hours each day, although ‘get out’ options were available for those who found the going too strenuous, so it was possible to cut walks short if necessary. No compulsion to walk each and every day, but we found the company so convivial and supportive that there were few absentees on any day.
Après walking was equally social, assembling on the terrace for well deserved liquid refreshment on return to the hotel, and then dining as a group on 3-4 tables, in either the buffet or à la carte restaurants.
Throughout, the weather was very acceptable, tending towards hot, particularly when taking the coastal/beach path from near the airport.
As a first experience of Tenerife and an opportunity to explore the non tourist areas, this was a vacation that one would find difficult to surpass; excellent company, wonderful views, a chance to escape the dreary November UK weather.
Would I recommend such a holiday? Most definitely; sign me up straightaway !
