Working Party Report January 2023

Stone me!

Almost a year ago the crew began the task of creating a series of steps on Clark’s Hill in Hampton, near Evesham. A report at the time was headed Stairway to Heaven or Uphill Struggle? I think we can now safely say that the latter applied.

The crew has revisited the location several times over the past year completing the steps and making adjustments and improvements. It became apparent over time that revetments (wooden sides to the steps) to retain the soil and a top dressing of stone would be required to complete the project.

And so in January this year members of the the working party gathered again to begin the task of fitting the revetments and putting down the stone. Unfortunately the whole site was one big mud bath making it difficult to retain ones feet, never mind carry out the work.

Nevertheless, the crew persevered. This required the transportation of bags of stone along muddy paths, reverting to tamping down by hand to back fill with soil where it had washed away and fixing the revetments. As the work progressed it became clear that it was not going to be possible to complete all the work and that the team will need to return to finish the task.

During a break for hot drinks and mince pies Louisa, from Worcestershire County Council Public Rights of Way Team, announced that she was taking on a new post and that this was to be the last time she would be working with the us. Members agreed that Loiusa will be sadly missed but wished her every success in her new position.
